Michelle Sanfilippo
Dr. White
In this continuum I believe I am actually stuck in the middle between being a native as well as an immigrant. When I was younger I got the opportunity to grow up in the years when the internet was booming. I feel like I am pretty capable working with a computer until I came into this class. It just made me realize how little I really do know about technology and the way to maneuver throughout the web. It amazes me just how easily it is for me to get overwhelmed when it comes to technology. I feel like I am a native because I was born into the age of technology but I feel like I am constantly being pushed outwards and treated like an immigrant because I am not keeping up with the vicious pace of new and improved technological resources.
In consideration to what we might call the real ‘immigrants’ to technology, they might see me as a true native. My parents for example, they might try to be up to date with the new technology but I feel like they have only skimmed the surface of what I have known. It might be because of their age different or just their generation but I believe it has to do with their social networks they belong to. My social networks are not only in person but they are strongly connected to the web. I use technology to connect with friends, find jobs…etc. My parents find it simplier, easier to connect with friends through means that were more common in the age before this technological boom.
I know that my future will be full of technology and specifically the use of the internet. As a teacher, this is the ways things are heading. Schools are relying more and more on technology to enhance the education system. I have seen so many technical advancements in the classroom, and I have seen the benefits technology can bring to both the students and the teachers. The students seem more engaged, there is more independent work, which then allows teachers more one-on-one time with students that is necessary. Planning becomes easier, as well as differentiation for students with accommodation needs; English language learners, children with learning disabilities or Individualized educational plans. As a teacher, I will most likely be placed in a school that incorporates technology. With the right professional development I will accept the benefits that come along with this resource.
